William Michael "Mick" Ulmer

November 26, 1935 - September 22, 2020

William Michael “Mick” Ulmer, 84 of Bluffton, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2020, at Ossian Health & Rehab. Center in Ossian. Mick was born on November 26, 1935 in Allen County to Ralph & Evelyn (Watkins) Ulmer. A 1953 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mick served his country in the US Army from 1956 to 1958. He was a classically trained pianist and was a proficient musician with brass instruments, particularly the trombone. Mick enjoyed working as a Letter Carrier for the Bluffton Post Office for 40 years and retired in 1995. On June 1, 1958 in Liberty Center, Mick and Phyllis A. (Mounsey) were married and have celebrated 62 years of marriage together. Survivors include his wife Phyllis of Ossian and their children; Gary (Pam) Ulmer of Covington GA, Kent (Tracey) Ulmer of Bluffton and Lisa (Tim) Eichler of Ossian. He was a loving grandpa to Ashley Ulmer, Tara (Geoff) Cocanower, Trisha (Landon) Stoller, Tyler (Haley) Ulmer, Jason (Jena) Eichler, Alex (Cassi) Eichler and Trevor Eichler. Mick also was a proud G-Pa to Kambree and Marshall Stoller and Otto Eichler. He was preceded in death by his sister Connie Grissel and is mourned by the many extended family members. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching a good bird dog work a covey of quail. Mick coached baseball in Bluffton for many years starting with the American Legion Team in the early 1960’s and culminating with teen league in the late 1970’s. In later years, he enjoyed watching golf and made a trip to Augusta for the Masters. His greatest thrill was a trip to Indiana University to watch the Hoosiers play basketball. He was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan. He was the Grand Marshal of the Street Fair Parade in 1995 and was a 50 year member - two time Past Master of Masonic Lodge #145 of Bluffton. He was a member of the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award. He was the Potentate (1995) of Mizpah Shrine in Fort Wayne and was involved in the Band and the Masquers Jazz band. He was also a member of American Legion Post # 111 of Bluffton and a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church. His was truly a life well lived and he will be forever missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 & 5 to 8 on Sunday (Oct. 11, 2020) at the Wells County 4-H Community Center located at 1240 4-H Road – Bluffton. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at 8 P.M. on Sunday at the conclusion of visitation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 A.M. on Monday (Oct. 12, 2020) at the Wells County 4-H Community Center with Pastor T. J. Lynch officiating and visitation for one hour prior to the service. The safety of the family and all visitors is our utmost priority. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you practice social distancing. Masks are required for visitation and for Mick’s service both being held at the Wells County 4-H Community Center. We appreciate your cooperation and patience. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Mick’s memory to: Shriners Hospitals for Children, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, or the Calvary Lutheran Church.
