Tripp, 93, passed away peacefully on December 21 at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne, IN, after an unexpected decline following surgery on December 5. Herb was born at his grandmother’s home in Barryton, Michigan on July 19, 1932, to Floyd and Doris (Haney) Tripp. Herb grew up in Detroit before moving to Indiana to attend Huntington University (née Huntington College). Herb took a leave from college to join the Navy. Following his 4-year enlistment, he returned to Huntington College to finish his degree where he had the good fortune of meeting Dorothy Anne Betterly, and they were married 2 years later on June 28, 1958. Herb and Dorothy lived in Ossian, Indiana nearly all of their married life, where they raised their two sons, Duane and Alan. They enjoyed over 60 years of marriage until Dorothy’s passing in 2019. In the lonely years since Dorothy’s passing, he reached out to many individuals who have appreciated companionship, due to illness or otherwise, and he honed the skills of being both a quiet presence and an engaged listener. Herb’s career was largely spent as a science, math, and computer programming teacher and department head at Norwell High School, followed by a number of years working with a small business that computerized large corporations. Herb continued to be a computer guru until his last days. Throughout Herb’s life he was an accomplished pen and ink artist, with a particular interest in drawing barns. In his retirement Herb became a master woodworker, making countless pieces of furniture, beautiful bowls, custom pieces, and dovetailed boxes for friends and family members’ cremains, including his own. He was still woodworking in his shop with his son, Alan, the day before his surgery. Herb is survived by his sons Duane Tripp, Shelbyville, IN, and Alan (Mona Jean Harley), Madison, WI, his grandchildren Annika and Eli, and many special relatives and friends. Herb was a long-standing and involved member of Lincolnshire Church of the Brethren, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3 at 2:00pm with a reception following the service. A visitation hour will be held at 1pm prior to the service. Memorials can be made to Lincolnshire Church of the Brethren, 6404 South Calhoun Street, Ft. Wayne, IN 46807.
