Maxine (Markley) Thompson 88 of Liberty Center, Indiana passed away at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 09, 2010, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, with her loving family at her side.
Maxine was born on September 16, 1921 to Ralph E. & Mary Alice (Garrett) Markley in the home of her grandparents, Frank & Elizabeth Garrett located in Liberty Center , Indiana . She was a very proud graduate of Bluffton High School in the class of 1939. As a young girl, Maxine worked in her father’s store, Markley’s Grocery, on West Market Street in Bluffton, until her marriage. Over the years she also worked at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic, the Progress 5 & 10 Store and retired in 1989 from J. C. Penny’s in Bluffton.
Maxine loved spending time with her family, cooking and sewing. She was a 70 year member of the Boehmer United Methodist Church where she faithfully served in many roles. She was also a 60 year member of the PBS Club.
On October 3, 1939 in the Parsonage of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church , Maxine & John Ware Thompson were married. They shared nearly 62 years of marriage together before he passed on January 29, 2001.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Thompson of Liberty Center and Dick Thompson of Bluffton , IN. She was also very proud of her 4 grandchildren; Jeff (Companion Tonya) Thompson of Fort Wayne, Jami (Tim) Prough, Jennifer (Chris) Earhart & Troy McAfee all of Bluffton, along with 6 great-grandchildren; Derek (fiancé Lacey) Prough, Jobe Thompson, Shelby Earhart, Josh Thompson, Trevor Prough & Jaci Prough, along with a great-great-grandson Jason Prough. She is also survived by a sister Ellen Green Moore of Sun City, AZ, a former daughter-in-law Cheryl (Thompson) Mann of Bluffton and a former son-in-law Roger McAfee also of Bluffton.
She is preceded in death by a son Bill Thompson, a daughter Joyce Ann McAfee and a sister Patty Jo Perkins.
Friends are invited to visit with Maxine’s family from 2 to 8 on Friday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the funeral home. Pastor Barry Humble will officiate. Burial will follow at Mossburg Cemetery in Liberty Center , Indiana .
