| Donald E. Davis, 89, of Poneto, died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at River Terrace Estates. Mr. Davis owned and operated Davis Drilling for many years, drilling his first oil well at the age of 19 in Wells County. He drilled oil wells all over the country and helped discover the oil field in Hillsdale, Mich. Oil drilling was his life’s passion.
He also farmed in Wells County for more than 50 years. He attended eight grades of school at Poneto and graduated in 1939 from Bluffton High School. Mr. Davis was born June 22, 1920, in Poneto, to Arch Davis and Dale Buckner Davis. He married Martha Courtney Nov. 11, 1942, in Marion; his wife died Nov. 7, 2008. Also surviving are two daughters, Gloria (Merlin) Dohrman of Keystone and Cynthia Cassell, and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a sister, Frances Marion Walsh. Calling will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Cliff Rush officiating. Burial will be in a private mausoleum at Elm Grove Cemetery.
