Hilma E. Flowers, 92, of Fort Wayne, a former resident of Bluffton, died at 3:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Flowers was a 1935 graduate of Benton Harbor High School in Michigan and attended Western Michigan University for two years. She worked for Baer Field Air Corps Supply from 1943 to 1946. She worked as a cashier for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1964 after 15 years of service. She was a founding member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where she served as a church organist for 15 years. She moved to Wells County in 1937.
Mrs. Flowers was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Kaleva, Mich., to John W. and Ida Sorila Pantilla. She married Joseph A. Flowers June 5, 1937, in Fort Wayne; her husband preceded her in death in 1994.
Survivors include a son, David A. (Lovalee) Flowers of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Tukianen of Lake Worth, Fla., and Edna Peterson of Ohio.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Viola Fick, Aileen Pivovar, Esther Berendsen, Helene Mackie, and Hilde Gooddell, and three brothers, Francis Pantilla, Thomas Pantilla, and Wesley Pantilla.
Calling will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Gene Kinney officiating. Burial will be at the Six Mile Cemetery, Bluffton.
